Awards for Leading Textile Exporters
Speaking at the opening ceremony for the award ceremony, Ahmet Öksüz, Chairman of the Istanbul Textile and Raw Materials Exporters’ Association (İTHİB) noted that the award-winning exporters have achieved great successes and added;
“We are awarding our exporters, who have made a great contribution to the exports of 10.5 billion dollars to 188 countries as of 2018 in textile and raw materials industries. With its significant contributions to our country’s economy, our industry provides employment for 413,000 people with 11,200 exporters. Our duty as the textile industry is to work day and night to increase our position in our existing markets, and to expand into new markets and move our exports to higher levels. Branding, design, R&D and innovation are always our top priorities. Today, of all 341 units design centers in Turkey, 62 of them are in the textile industry. In addition, we have 71 R&D centers in our industry. The fact that we have reached the highest export value of 1.7 billion dollars in technical textile exports in 2018 is the biggest indicator of this. 18 years ago, the Turkish textile and raw materials indsutry ranked 13th in the world, and then achieved climbing up the top of the list. Today, Turkey ranks as the world’s seventh largest supplier, and the second largest in the European Union.”
Noting that Turkey has managed to get ahead of many “developed countries” in the past, Öksüz said that “Our goal is to move our country’s ranking to upper ranks in the global market share. The textile industry will continue to be one of the most important sectors as it was yesterday and as it is today.”
Turkey Ranks the 7th in the Global Textiles
Delivering a speech at the ceremony, Deputy Commerce Minister Rıza Tuna Turagay also drew attention to the textile industry’s importance in Turkey’s economy. Turagay said, “While Turkey’s share in total global exports is 0.9%, her share in total textile exports in the world is 3.1%. Our country ranks 31st in the global exports, and 7th in textiles. This shows us that we have a competitive edge. We should continue supporting the textile industry and further strengthen our position. We aim to increase our textile industry’s volume to 15 billion dollars and then to 20-25 billion dollars in 2023.”
Textile Engineering Project Inspire Other Industries
In his speech pointing out the historical development of the textile industry, TIM Chairman İsmail Gülle said that “Since last year when exporters unions were established in Turkey, Turkey’s foreign trade and exporters are represented by the Turkey Exporters Assembly. And it serves in the best way possible. Last month, the exports figures for April were announced by President for the first time. April has been the highest month in the history of the Republic with an increase of 6%. We have seen a successful increase on the part of our textile and apparel industries. We are breaking records in exports every month, multiplying our success.”
