The Highest Yarn Export Occured in 2018 at All Times
The yarn industry, one of the first steps in the industrialization process in the world has a history that goes back to tens of thousands of years ago. Becoming a semi-finished product, which creates added value by maintaining its importance over the years, yarn has been produced for thousands of years, and is one of the most basic products.
All yarn types from sewing yarns cotton yarns, synthetic artificial filament fibers and filaments, synthetic-artificial staple fibers yarns, yarns made of wool and fine-coarse animal hair, herbal fiber yarns and silk yarns are produced and exported according to the market demands with the established modern infrastructure In the Turkish yarn industry. Today all hygienic fabrics, anti-bacterial silver alloy surgical gowns, fire protection clothing, anti-contamination suits and nanotechnological water-repellent fabrics are spun with local material supported by R&D works.
The yarn industry, which is one of the important sub-sectors in the textile industry with its investment capacity and export potential, continues to strengthen its position thanks to its raw material supply for other industries.
HIGHEST YARN EXPORTS WERE MADE TO ITALY IN 2018
Yarn exports increased by 7% in 2018 and reached an all time high with 1.9 billion dollars. In addition, the most important product sub-group has been the yarns made of synthetic-artificial filament fibers in the January-December period of 2018 with an export value of 732 million dollars. This product group has a share of 38.1% in total yarn exports. In 2018, Italy was the most important country in yarn exports. Exports amounting to 241 million dollars were made to Italy. Other important countries are the UK, Portugal and the Netherlands.
ADDITIONAL CUSTOMS DUTY ON YARN IMPORTS
With the decision published in the Official Gazette on January 16, additional customs duties were introduced on the import of cotton and artificial-synthetic yarns. According to this decision, the additional customs duties imposed as 5% and 8% of the imported cotton yarns and synthetic yarns will be applied for countries other than the EU members and Turkey.
Ahmet Öksüz, Chairman of Istanbul Textile and Raw Materials Exporters’ Association (İTHİB), said the following about this decision, “A great step has been taken for the textile and raw materials industry with the additional customs duty on imported yarn.” 1.3 billion dollars worth of yarns are imported annually. As with other products, yarn imports are also protected by additional customs duty. I would like to thank you for this decision on additional customs tax. I believe more measures should be taken for the textile industry and I am expecting more support.”
