Turkey Holds an Important Point in Knitted Fabrics Export
The knitted textile sector holds a distinguished point in knitted fabrics manufacture. Turkey, possessing an important place in the industry due to its export performance in recent years, is among the largest suppliers in the exports of knitted fabrics in the world.
Continuing its growth and expansion in the textile industry, the knitting industry is constantly developing technologically. Nowadays, circular knitting machines, due to their high production performances, are used in the production of knitted weave surfaces by the meter; while, the flat knitting machines are used largely in the production of fully fashion knitting surfaces. In addition, knitting machines are widely used in the production of fancy apparel and outerwear products due to their high patterning capabilities.
The amount of the export of knitted fabrics comes right after the export amounts of fiber, yarn, and woven fabric according to the product groups; and it constitutes 15.2 percent of the export of textile and raw materials.
Knitted fabric exports worth amount to 1.5 billion dollars
In January through December 2019, knitted fabric exports amounted to 1.5 billion dollars. In the same period, the most important sub-product group in knitted fabric exports was other knitted fabrics with an export value of approximately 857 million dollars. This product group takes a 56.7 percent share in total knitted fabric exports.
Most of the Exports to Italy
In the period between January and December 2019, the most important country in knitted fabric exports was Italy, where exports worth amounted to 210 million dollars. Other outstanding countries in knitted fabric exports in this period were Bulgaria and Russia. Among the top ten export markets in which knitted fabric was exported in the same period, Kyrgyzstan was the country with the highest increase in exports by 287.7 percent.
Looking at the EU (28) countries, which have a 49.5 percent share in knitted fabric exports, total exports amounted to $ 747 million in the period between January and December of the last year.
Knitwear exports to 160 countries in the world
Turkey exports 300 million pieces of knitwear, annually. It exports knitwear to 160 countries in the world, with around 72 percent to the European Union. As of this year, regarding knitwear, a turnover of 2 billion 100 million dollars was achieved and a growth of 9 percent was recorded in terms of manufacturing figures. Our country also exports 3 billion knitwear pieces in the category of ready-made clothing.

2 billion dollars export is targeted in socks sector
After China, the second-largest supplier of socks in the world is Turkey, which achieved a 1.1 billion dollars worth of exports last year. The industry is targeted to reach up to 2 billion dollars worth of exports as soon as possible. In line with this goal; through the project carried out with the participation of the Turkish Employment Association, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Lifelong Learning Center and Marmara University, at least 200 sock knitting operators will be brought to the industry in one year. In today’s Turkey, over 2.5 billion pairs of socks are manufactured in the large and small businesses, which are over 2 thousand. Approximately, 90 percent of the production is exported. Global socks export market, which is worth 12 billion dollars, Turkey’s share is about 10 percent.
