A Modern Touch to 50 Years of Ultrasonic Device Expertise from Decoup+: Advanced Design Series
In 1975, Decoup+ by Spoolex launched its first range of ultrasonic cutting and welding devices. Fifty years later, this iconic range has undergone a visual and ergonomic makeover, developed collaboratively to meet the demands of today’s production environments, without compromising the legendary reliability that has defined the range for decades.
50 Years of History
Based in a French region with a long-standing tradition in textile production, particularly ribbon manufacturing, this forward-thinking SME began research on ultrasonic cutting and welding technology in 1972, in collaboration with the local engineering school ENISE. Over the past 50 years, the devices have continuously evolved, resulting in a proven and reliable technology whose performance is recognized by customers around the world.
How Do You Reinvent A Product When Its Performance is Already Firmly Established?
The answer quickly became clear: while the technology had long proven its worth, user experience highlighted the need to modernize the manual devices.
“Our devices are used every day in demanding industrial environments. It was important to us that their design should now reflect the level of quality and expertise they have represented for fifty years,” says Cyrille Pontet, General Manager of Spoolex.
To meet this challenge, the company brought together its internal resources, involving its Technical and R&D, Production, Purchasing, Sales and Marketing teams, with three key objectives: rethink the devices’ exterior design and color scheme, improve handling and ergonomics, and create a strong visual identity.
The Starting Point
The teams first focused on the ergonomics and design of the P 300W ultrasonic gun. The design was completely reworked to create a more modern, distinctive form inspired by the fuselage of fighter aircraft and the aerodynamic lines associated with speed and performance. The colors were also redesigned to align with current design trends, while retaining the industrial character that is important to the brand. The objective: a more ergonomic device that is instantly recognizable on the production floor, while remaining consistent with users’ established working habits. Once the device had been redesigned, creating a visual identity for the entire range of manual devices became the natural next step, giving rise to a new range named “Advanced Design Series”
“Advanced Design Series is the evolution of our historic range, with redesigned ergonomics and a new visual identity, while retaining the performance that has made it successful,” explains Sylvie Montagne, Sales Manager of Decoup+
A Strong Teamwork
The Advanced Design Series is the result of a genuine collaborative effort. The Design team focused on refining the device’s lines, shapes and ergonomics. The Technical teams ensured that the proven technology was preserved while supporting the evolution of the devices through their new exterior design. The Purchasing team selected the materials best suited to the product’s requirements. The Sales teams brought their field experience, customer insights and knowledge of market developments to the project. Marketing contributed to developing the new visual identity and color codes for the range. Finally, Management supported the project by securing human and financial resources.
“We are proud of this result, which was born from a rich exchange of ideas and expertise, with everyone contributing to the project,” says Cyrille Pontet, General Manager of Spoolex.
The Advanced Design Series consists of three devices: the P 300W gun, the T 300W straight-cutting/tabletop unit, and the Mini Press 300W. All three are now available. The very first devices have just been shipped to customers, marking a new chapter in Decoup+’s history, fifty years after the launch of its first range of ultrasonic devices.
What is Ultrasonic Technology?
Ultrasonic technology converts an electrical signal into mechanical vibrations. These vibrations generate localized heat, enabling thermofusible materials, materials that melt under the effect of heat, to be cut or welded, including synthetic and technical textiles, nonwovens and thermoplastics. When the vibrations stop, the material immediately solidifies, producing a clean, precise finish without discoloration, burning or excess thickness. Fast and aesthetically pleasing, ultrasonic technology enables the finished product to be used directly, without additional processing. The Decoup+ range includes both manual devices and units designed for integration into existing production lines, for cutting and/or welding operations.
