DeFacto Aims to Zero Its Carbon Footprint
DeFacto published its “Sustainability Report” for 2022. DeFacto continues its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint by 55% in 2030 and to become a “climate-positive” brand by zeroing its emissions by 2050.
DeFacto continues to be one of the pioneers of the ready-to-wear sector with its sustainability efforts. The company, transparently sharing its efforts and goals in this area with the public, announced its 2022 Sustainability Report.
İhsan Ateş, CEO of DeFacto, shared that ‘We are a brand that puts sustainability at the center of its business’ and said: “Our founding understanding and company values are based on production that protects the world and natural resources and respects the ecosystem. Projects that add value to people and a sensitive stance towards social issues are part of this philosophy. We take care to maintain all these not alone, but by including our internal and external stakeholders, taking into account their needs and making them a part of our operational integrity.”

DeFacto became a member of Better Cotton Initiative (BCI)
With the principle it has adopted, DeFacto carries out sustainable projects such as DeFactoLIFE brand, Apple Leather Accessories and Shoes Collection, which are produced with materials recycled or obtained from sustainable sources in 2022. At the same time; DeFactoFIT application and website, DeFacto GiftClub project, DeFacto Technology company’s ‘fijital’ projects that consider sustainability, the new e-commerce warehouse in Istanbul Yassıören, which significantly reduces carbon emissions, and membership in the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), one of the world’s leading initiatives in sustainability in cotton production.
By 2050, It Commits to Become a ‘Climate Positive’ Brand by Zeroing Its Emissions
DeFacto shared the steps it plans for the future in its Sustainability Report. The brand’s 2023 targets include using 20% cotton and recycled polyester in its raw materials and ensuring that 100% of its shopping bags, cardboard, paper and other packaging is recyclable and sustainable. The 2030 targets include making 90% of its ready-to-wear collections sustainable and reducing its carbon footprint by 55%. DeFacto aims to become a “climate-positive” brand by 2050 by zeroing its missions.
“Despite Increasing the Number of Stores, We Reduce Energy Intensity”
İhsan Ateş on sustainability goals: “We are developing energy and water-saving production methods in parallel with these goals. Despite increasing stores both in Turkey and globally, we manage to reduce energy intensity. We achieve a high level of savings with the new technology washing methods we apply with water-saving denim projects. With our efforts focused on reducing the threat to the climate, we want to manage our own operations with 100% zero waste by the end of 2023 and 100% renewable energy consumption by 2030.” he said.
“A strong part of our sustainability approach is our perspective on gender equality,” İhsan Ateş: “We believe that women should be more and stronger in business life and social spheres for the realization of social welfare. We are the first retail company in Turkey to sign the United Nations Women’s Empowerment Principles protocol in 2015. 60% of our employees are women. We lead inspiring stories with the “Happy Women Movement”, our initiative to strengthen the place and participation of women in the business world, and the ‘Fabric Dreams’ project, which is reinforced by our brand’s social responsibility approach.”
