The Interaction of Textile Finishing Industry & Textile Machinery in Turkey
The textile finishing sector is one of the most important and powerful fields of our country’s textile industry. While there are approximately 600 textile-finishing facilities in our country, it is observed that the employment in the sector is approximately 150 thousand.
The abovementioned textile finishing facilities have the capacity to produce 20-25 tons of fabric per day. In addition, an average of 250 employees can be employed in a textile-finishing factory. When we consider at a national level, there are nearly 600 textile facilities in Turkey for the finishing industry and are approximately 150 thousand people employed in this sector.
Hayri Etci, General Secretary of the Textile Machinery and Accessories Industrialists Association (TEMSAD), prensted sectoral assessments regarding the “Dyeing & Finishing Technologies” section, which we have prepared for this month’s issue. We present it to our readers.
Best Finishing Processes are Achieved in Turkey
Possessing all these features, the Turkey textile finishing sector, ranks third in terms of production, following China and India. The best finishing process, including so-called knitted fabric particularly with natural fibers as cotton and viscose group in the global market, is achieved in Turkey. In particular, the speed and fashion understanding of the textile finishing processes are in a pretty good position in Turkey compared to other countries in the world market.
The textile-finishing sector, which has a very important position in the manufacturing industry and export volume of our country, naturally affects its interaction with the textile machinery sector. While Turkey increases its market share in the world in textile machinery, it is clearly observed that textile-finishing machinery is the particular sub-product group that our country is the most competitive and provides foreign trade surplus.
Exports in Finishing Machinery Was 3 Times the Imports
By the end of 2019, Turkey’s textile machinery exports amounted to very close to 800 million US Dollars. On the other hand, textile machinery imports decreased by 36 percent, amounting to 1.2 billion US Dollars, compared to the previous year. Exports of textile finishing machines within the total textile machinery export amounted to 600 million US Dollars. Thus, about 75 percent of exports were made up of textile finishing machinery. In addition, among the textile machinery imports in 2019, the import of finishing machines was about 200 million US Dollars. According to this situation, exports in textile finishing machines were 3 times of imports.
Turkey listed as the 7th in the World Rankings
The total export of textile finishing machines in the world was 8.6 billion US Dollars in 2019. Approximately 28 percent of the total world textile machinery exports (30 billion US Dollars) was textile-finishing machines. China ranked first with 1.2 billion US Dollars and immediately followed by Germany with 956 million US Dollars in the export cake of 8.6 billion US Dollars. Within this ranking, Turkey is listed as the 7th with its exports of textile finishing machinery amounting to 600 million US Dollars.
The outlook of Turkey’s foreign trade in 2019 demonstrated differences in the first six months of 2020 (January-June). In the January-June 2020 period, Turkey’s exports decreased by 15.7 percent compared to the same period of 2019, while imports increased by 33.4 percent. The same proportions were approximately valid for textile finishing machinery.
In the first six months of 2020 (January-June), Turkey’s textile finishing machinery imports amounted to approximately 100 million US Dollars. A large part of this import volume was generated by the machinery from China. Textile finishing machines were sold to our country in the first six months of the year, from China amounting to 40 million US Dollars, from Germany amounting to 20 million US Dollars and from Italy amounting to 16 million US Dollars.
In contrast, in the January-June period of 2020, Turkey’s finishing machinery exports amounted to 216 million US Dollars. It was seen that an important part of this export was made to countries such as Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, and Italy.
There Will Be A Period of Revisions and Modernizations
Within the body of TEMSAD (Association of Textile Machinery and Accessories Manufacturers), there are 65 member companies in the fields of textile finishing, dyeing, finishing, stenter machines, automation, and auxiliary equipment.
A collaboration protocol was signed on November 14, 2018, between Turkey Association of Textile Finishing Industry (TTTSD) and TEMSAD management boards in order to increase the domestic interaction of textile finishing machinery manufacturers, which are capable of carrying out turnkey projects and improve their quality every year. With this protocol, it was aimed to increase the interaction of machine manufacturers and textile finishing industrialists. One of the main goals was to increase the awareness of domestic producers who compete with the world in terms of quality and price and to encourage the use of domestic machinery.
