Exports of 5.2 Billion Dollars in the First Quarter from the Ready-to-Wear and Garment Industry
The ready-to-wear and garment industry realized exports of 5 billion 204 million dollars in January-March 2023, with a decrease of 4.4% compared to the same period of the previous year.
The Turkish textile industry could not reach the targeted figures in the first quarter of 2023. Two major earthquake disasters, the epicenter of which was in Kahramanmaraş on February 6 and affecting 11 provinces, were effective in this. The interruption of production due to the earthquake at the facilities in Gaziantep and Kahramanmaraş, which are considered the centers of the textile industry, had a negative impact on the export figures of the first quarter. However, export figures started to increase from the end of March.
According to the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM); Turkey’s exports increased by 4.4 percent in March compared to the same month of the previous year and amounted to 23.6 billion dollars. Thus, the highest monthly export of all time was reached.
In January-March 2023, exports increased by 2.5 % compared to the same period of the previous year and reached 61.6 billion dollars. The ready-to-wear and garment industry, which realized an export of approximately 2 billion dollars in March 2022, made 1 billion 997 million dollars of exports with a decrease of 0.8 % in the same period of this year.

The Most Exports in Ready-to- Wear was Made from Istanbul
A part of 1.4 billion dollars of the sector’s exports in March was made from Istanbul. Bursa followed Istanbul with $165 million and Izmir with $129 million. Of the 5.2 billion dollars export of the sector in the January-March period of this year, 3.7 billion dollars was made from Istanbul, 430 million dollars from Bursa and 354 million dollars from Izmir.
Most exports to Germany
Last month, the country with the highest export sales in the ready-to-wear and apparel sector was Germany with 295 million dollars. Germany was followed by Spain with $244 million and the Netherlands with $155 million. In the January-March period, the sector exported 862 million dollars to Germany, 602 million dollars to Spain and 414 million dollars to the Netherlands.
Exports of 3 Billion Dollars in the First Quarter from the Textile and Raw Materials Industry
According to the report published by Istanbul Textile and Raw Materials Exporters’ Association (İTHİB); Exports of the Turkish textile and raw materials sector amounted to approximately 3 billion dollars in the January-March period of 2023, with a decrease of 11.9% compared to the same period of the previous year. In March 2023, exports of textiles and raw materials increased by 23.1% compared to the previous month when the earthquake disaster occurred; It decreased by 8.6% compared to March 2022 and reached a value of approximately 1.1 billion dollars. In the first quarter of 2023, exports of textiles and raw materials were mostly made to EU (27) countries, and a value of 1.2 billion dollars was recorded with a decrease of 24.7% compared to the same period of 2022.
Exports of 240.4 Million Dollars to Italy
In the January-March period of 2023, when the prominent countries in Turkey’s textile and raw materials exports are evaluated, Italy maintained its first place. In this period, exports to Italy decreased by 33.5% and amounted to approximately 240.4 million dollars. The second and third countries with the highest exports of textiles and raw materials in this period were Germany with an export value of 210.7 million dollars and the USA with an export value of 162.3 million dollars, respectively. In the January-March period of 2023, among the top 10 countries to which Turkey exports the most textiles and raw materials, the country with the highest increase in exports was Iran with an increase of 15.8%.
637.1 Million Dollars of Woven Fabrics Exported in the First Quarter
In the January-March period of 2023, when the exports of the Turkish textile and raw materials sector were analyzed on the basis of product groups, it was announced that the most important product group was the woven fabric product group with a share of 21.4%. In this period, woven fabric exports amounted to 637.1 million dollars with a decrease of 3.2%. In the January-March period of 2023, knitted fabric exports increased by 3.2% to 502.7 million dollars, while home textiles decreased by 13% to 476.3 million dollars, and fiber exports decreased by 3% to 287.5 million dollars.
