Exports of 5.5 Billion Dollars in 7 Months from the Textile and Raw Materials Industry
Turkey’s textile and raw materials sector, which is an important source of employment, exported 5 billion 509 million dollars to 196 countries in the first 7 months of 2023. 2 billion 98 million 161 thousand dollars, which corresponds to 38.7 percent of this export, was made to European countries. While the sector exports the most to Italy, the income it obtained from the fabric was 3 billion 573 million 804 thousand dollars.
Europe was followed by the Former Eastern Bloc with 993 million 295 thousand dollars and African countries with 656 million 807 thousand dollars. On a country basis, the sector made its highest exports to Italy, which is called the “country of fashion”, with 469 million 598 thousand dollars. The sector, which obtained the highest income from fabric with 3 billion 573 million 804 thousand dollars, brought 1 billion 310 million 101 thousand dollars from yarn and 625 million 126 thousand dollars from fiber.
According to the data of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK); employment in the textile and ready-made clothing sectors decreased to 1 million 182 thousand in May 2023. The textile and raw materials sector, on the other hand, provided 480 thousand employ in May 2023.
According to the capacity utilization report announced by the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey; the capacity utilization rate, which was 70.4% in the production of textile products in July 2023, decreased by 8% compared to July of the previous year.
The Most Exports of Textiles and Raw Materials to the EU
Istanbul Textile and Raw Materials Exporters’ Association (İTHİB) has published the July 2023 Export Performance Report. Economic fluctuations around the world also affected Turkish textile exports. In the January-July period, exports of the textile and raw materials sector decreased by 12.6% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Turkey’s textile and raw materials sector exports decreased by 4.5% in July 2023 and amounted to 865 million dollars. In the same month, exports of textiles and raw materials decreased by 9% compared to the previous month and by 4.3% compared to July 2022.
In the January-July period of 2023, the most exports of textiles and raw materials were made to EU (27) countries. Exports to EU countries decreased by 22.5% compared to the same period of 2022 and reached a value of 2.4 billion dollars. In the same period, African countries became the second country group to which Turkey exported the most textiles and raw materials. Exports to African countries decreased by 18.9% in this period and reached 622 million dollars.
Exports to Bulgaria Increased by 32%
In the January-July period of 2023, the most important export market was Italy. In this period, exports of textiles and raw materials to Italy decreased by 28.7% and fell to approximately 533 million dollars. In this period, the second country with the highest export was Germany. Turkey’s exports of textiles and raw materials to Germany decreased by 18.9% and amounted to approximately 472 million dollars. In July 2023, exports to Bulgaria, one of the prominent countries in Turkey’s textile and raw materials exports, increased by 32%.
Most Exported Product Group Woven Fabric
In the January-July period of 2023, when the exports of the Turkish textile and raw materials sector are analyzed on the basis of product groups; It was seen that the most important product group was woven fabric with a share of 21%. The most important sub-product group was the export of woven fabrics made of synthetic artificial filament yarns with a share of 39.9% and an export value of 563 million dollars. While 36.8% of Turkey’s woven fabric exports are carried out to EU countries, exports to these countries decreased by 16.1% in the January-July period of 2023 and amounted to 520 million dollars.
Turkey World’s 5th Largest Woven Fabric Supplier
On the other hand; In 2021, woven fabric exports in the world increased by 24% and amounted to 74.8 billion dollars. China has become the world’s largest exporter with a 52.6% share in global woven fabric exports and an export of 39.3 billion dollars. Turkey, on the other hand, maintained its share of 3.1% in global woven fabric exports in 2021 and continued its position as the world’s 5th largest woven fabric supplier in 2022. Turkey’s woven fabric exports in 2021 amounted to 2.3 billion dollars with an increase of 25.5%.
Vietnam ranked first in global woven fabric imports with a share of 10.9%. Turkey, on the other hand, was the 13th largest woven fabric importer with a share of 1.9%. Turkey’s woven fabric imports increased by 8.1% in 2021 and reached 1.2 billion dollars.
1.3 Billion Dollars of Technical Textile Exports
In the period of July 2023, the second product group with the highest export was technical textiles. A decrease of 5.8% was recorded in technical textiles and exports amounted to approximately 1.3 billion dollars. In the January-July period of 2023, 29.3% of total exports consisted of nonwovens product group. Turkey’s nonwoven exports decreased by approximately 16.5% and reached a value of 380 million dollars. The second most important product group in technical textile exports was bags and sacks for packaging made of technical textiles, with a share of 14.1% in total exports. Turkey’s exports of the relevant product group decreased by 22.1% and amounted to 183 million dollars. The third most important product group in technical textile exports was wadding and felt with a share of 8.1% in total technical textile exports in the January-July 2023 period. In the same period, wadding and felt exports increased by 33.5% and reached a value of 105 million dollars.
The Most Technical Textiles Exported to Germany
Germany was the country to which Turkey exported the most technical textiles in the January-July 2023 period. Technical textile exports to Germany decreased by 21% and amounted to 93 million dollars. Italy followed Germany with an export of 90 million dollars and the USA with an export of 87 million dollars. In the January-July 2023 period, the most significant increase among the top 10 countries to which Turkey exported the most technical textiles was experienced in exports to Czechia with 9.8%. In this period, Turkey’s technical textile exports to Czechia amounted to 36 million dollars with a share of 2.8%.
Turkey Ranks 15th in Global Technical Textile Exports
Meanwhile, global technical textile exports increased by 6.4% to 121.3 billion dollars in 2021. It has been observed that technical textile exports have increased by 27.4 billion dollars in the last 10 years. The export of China, which is the world’s largest exporter with a share of 28.7% in the technical textile product group, was recorded as 34.8 billion dollars with a decrease of 6.4%. Turkey’s technical textile exports decreased by 12.9% in 2021 and amounted to approximately 2.4 billion dollars. Turkey fell from 8th to 15th in global technical textile exports. Looking at the global technical textile imports, it was observed that the import increased by 3.9% compared to the previous year and reached 115.5 billion dollars, and the USA ranked first with a share of 14.2% in the global technical textile imports.
England, USA and Egypt Come to the Forefrontin Yarn Exports
Yarn exports, which is the third most important product group in Turkey’s textile and raw materials exports, decreased by 22.7% in the January-July period of 2023 to a value of 1.2 billion dollars. The most important country in yarn export is Italy, with an export value of 142 million dollars; y arn exports to Italy decreased by 34% in this period. Other important countries that stand out in yarn export are England, USA and Egypt.
When yarn exports are analyzed on the basis of sub-product groups, the most important sub-product group was yarns made of synthetic artificial filament fibers with an export value of 490 million dollars. The share of yarns made of synthetic artificial filament fibers in total yarn exports was recorded as 40.5%. The export of synthetic-artificial staple fibers, which is the second largest sub-product group with a 30.8% share in total yarn exports, decreased by 15.1% in the January-July period of 2023 and amounted to 372 million dollars.
Global Yarn Exports Increased by 41.5% in 2021
On the other hand, it has been observed that the world’s yarn exports in 2021 increased by 41.5% and reached 54.7 billion dollars, while exports increased by more than 3 billion dollars in the last 10 years. In the yarn product group, China became the world’s largest yarn exporter with a 25.3% share in global yarn exports and an export of 13.8 billion dollars. Turkey increased its share in global yarn exports to 4.9% in 2021, placing it in the 5th place among the world’s largest yarn suppliers. Turkey realized 12.2% of its total yarn exports to Italy. With its 6.3% share in global yarn imports, Turkey fell one step behind Bangladesh and became the world’s 3rd largest yarn supplier. Turkey’s yarn import amounted to 3.4 billion dollars.

Billion Dollars of Knitted Fabric Export
In the January-July period of 2023, knitted fabric exports decreased by 0.3% to 1.1 billion dollars. The most important sub-product group; other knitted fabrics with an export value of 721 million dollars. In the same period, the second sub-product group to which the sector exports the most was knitted fabrics containing elastomeric or rubber yarn with a share of 28.9% in total exports. The most important country in knitted fabric exports was Italy, with an export value of 119 million dollars. In this period, knitted fabric exports to Italy decreased by 25.4%. Other important countries that stand out in the export of knitted fabrics; Bulgaria, Kyrgyzstan and Morocco. Exports to EU countries, where 35.4% of Turkey’s knitted fabric exports are realized, decreased by 12.6% and reached a value of 407 million dollars.
Knitted Fabric Export Breaks All-Time Record in 2021
Meanwhile, global knitted fabric exports rose 34.3% in 2021 to reach $42.5 billion, reaching an all-time high. China ranked first in knitted fabric exports with a share of 54.3%. China’s knitted fabric exports increased by 42% in 2021 to a value of 23.1 billion dollars. Turkey became the 4th largest knitted fabric supplier with a 5.1% share in global knitted fabric exports. Turkey’s knitted fabric exports increased by 42.8% in 2021 to a value of 2.2 billion dollars. Vietnam ranked first in global knitted fabric imports with a share of 22.1%. Vietnam’s knitted fabric imports increased by 55.2% in 2021 to reach a value of 8.1 billion dollars. In 2021, Turkey’s knitted fabric imports increased by 24.4% and reached a value of 429 million dollars.
The Most Denim Fabric Exports was Made to Tunisia
In the January-July period of 2023, Turkey’s denim fabric exports decreased by 23.4% to 142 million dollars. Tunisia was the most important country in denim fabric exports with an export of 29 million dollars and a share of 20.6%. While Egypt ranked second with a 17.4% share and an export value of 24 million dollars, Morocco took the third place with a 10.9% share and an export value of 15.5 million dollars.
14.5% Decrease in Home Textile Exports
In the January-July period of 2023, the home textile sector decreased by 14.5% to approximately 1.1. exported billions of dollars. In the same period, when home textile exports were analyzed on the basis of sub-product groups, it was seen that the most important product group was towels and cleaning cloths with a share of 31.2%. Turkey’s towel and cleaning cloth exports decreased by 21.2% in this period and reached a value of 342 million dollars. In the January-July period of 2023, Germany became the most important country in home textile exports. Home textile exports to Germany in this period decreased by 14.7% and amounted to approximately 211 million dollars.
On the other hand, it was observed that global home textile exports increased by 27.7% in 2021 and reached 65.5 billion dollars, and home textile exports increased by 18.3 billion dollars in the last 10 years. The export of China, which is the world’s largest exporter with a 51% share in the home textile product group, was recorded as 33.4 billion dollars with an increase of 29.7%.
Fiber Exports to Iran Increased by 23.6%
In the January-July 2023 period, the most important sub-product group in fiber exports, which decreased by 9.3% and amounted to 611 million dollars, was synthetic fiber with a share of 50.6%. In this period, synthetic fiber exports decreased by 26.3% and amounted to 309 million dollars. The second most exported sub-product group in the same period was cotton fiber with a share of 47.3%. Iran, the most important country in Turkey’s fiber exports, took 16% of the total fiber export with an export of 98 million dollars. Fiber exports to Iran increased by 23.6% compared to the same period of 2022. Other important countries in fiber exports include Germany, Vietnam and Italy.
